Biography

Frederick  William Jackson was born in 1859 at Middleton Junction. He was one of three  children, and his father worked as a photographer in Oldham.

Plein Air

Britain  has a strong tradition of landscape  painting reaching back to the eighteenth century.

Portraits

Jackson was an accomplished portrait painter and received many commission for portraits of local dignitaries and worthies.

Mural

Jackson  was a lifelong friend of the Middleton born architect Edgar Wood (1860-1935). As boys, they went together on sketching expeditions around Middleton

Staithes

It was the Leeds painter, Gilbert Foster, who first pioneered painting at the North Yorkshire fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay.
